The Pousadas of Portugal are a system of historic accommodations located in some of Portugal's most interesting and beautiful locations. The pousadas were originally designed as rest houses for travelers in areas that did not offer other accommodation. From that early start the pousadas are now located in Castles, Palaces, Monasteries and Manor Houses. The Pousadas of Portugal are truly a way to step back in time, as you enjoy the luxury of some of Portugal's most precious resources.
The most popular way to visit the Pousadas of Portugal is with a rental car. Some of the more remote pousadas are impossible to reach with public transportation. There are a few pousadas located in the larger towns where you can have the pousada experience using public transportation. There are pousadas in Evora, Guimaraes, Viana do Castelo, Vila Vicosa and Sagres. You can click on the links on the navigation bar to see our suggested 3 and 6 night itineraries which can be combined to make longer programs using the pousadas. There are no pousadas in Lisbon or Porto. You can stay in Queluz for Lisbon and Guimaraes for Porto, although if you have a longer trip planned, it might be more practical to stay in a hotel in those cities and the pousadas as you travel. |
