Pousadas can be found in all the regions of Portugal except Madeira island.  Continental Portugal is relatively small, the size of Indiana, and can be driven north to south in a few hours.  Short descriptions of each area are listed below.  Remember, don't go overboard in trying to see all of them.  Each area offers more than enough for a week each. Oporto & NorthPousadas in the Oporto & North Region: Known as the "Cradle of Portugal", this area north of the fabled Douro river is a mountainous region with rivers, natural parks and steep, sloping hillsides. The Douro river valley, with its many vineyards is today classified as a world heritage site.  More info

Central

Pousadas in the Central Region: Home to the University town of Coimbra, home of Portugal's oldest university. The area boasts historical towns and villages like Guarda, Linhares, and others emblematic of this 'granite' area. More info

Lisbon area

Alentejo

Algarve
